#1. Use a Strainer

We all know what a strainer for cooking is, however, did you know there’s also a strainer for the drains in your showers and sinks? A basket strainer for your shower prevents hair and soap buildup from entering the drains and makes it easier for you to clean your drain while preventing you from needing to snake it or call a plumber.

#2. Watch What You Flush

Be mindful of what you flush down your toilets! It can be easy to think since you don’t see a problem, it doesn’t exist. But if you allow too many items to be flushed down the toilet, over time you may find yourself with a major plumbing issue.

Never flush these items down your toilet:

  • Cotton swabs, cotton balls, cotton pads
  • Paper towels
  • ‘Flushable’ wipes
  • Feminine hygiene products
  • Hair or pet fur

These items may seem small but they can cause major clogs and serious damage to your pipes.

#3. Know Where Your Water Shut-Off Valve Is

Since you can’t fix most plumbing issues, especially emergencies yourself, it is crucial for everyone in your household to know where the water shut-off valve is located.

This way, if your water is cut off for any reason you can quickly turn it back on and either repair the problem or call for help.

If you run into a plumbing emergency, don’t try to fix it yourself. Instead, call a professional plumber from Frank Gay Services right away.

#4. Avoid Chemical Drain Cleaners

It’s easy to believe that since drain cleaners are sold in stores, they would be safe to use and effective, but it turns out they are actually quite dangerous. These chemicals can cause damage to your lungs from breathing them in and can be a huge safety risk to anyone around them.

These harsh ingredients can also cause your pipes to deteriorate especially after repeated use.

#5. Don’t Ignore Minor Leaks

If you have a small leak, don’t ignore it. Leaving a small leak alone can lead to more serious problems including water damage and mold which will cause you more headaches and cost you more money down the road.

Leaks almost always become worse and it’s not something you want to wait on. If you have a small leak, contact us right away so we can come out and fix the issue.
